I woke up, papers in hand, and no one was there. We all went out to lay out in the sun. I was going to read for my upcoming European Union class and I fell asleep, I awoke and everyone had fled. These last three days have felt more like three weeks. I have been so caught up with all the work that I have been infected with an intense case of boredom and have resulted to either sleep or complaining. Thank god Italy is tomorrow.
We are all so pumped. Currently we are sailing by the Sardinia Island. Our European Union teacher stopped class to tell us! He is such a funny guy. Yet I see him sitting alone at times during lunch or dinner, but recently found out he has a wife, so now I’m at ease. I hate the sight of lonely people!
Within these three days I have taken two exams and written two papers. ALL DONE! I am packed and ready to explore this grand ancestral country. We had our debriefing for Italy tonight and once again was prepped for the "do’s" and "don’ts" for our travels, including the ever so popular sex speech. But we are in a 90% catholic demographic. Roman Catholic to be exact so any sex before marriage is already frowned upon. DUH! Also sexual relations with a foreigner is not recommended by me. Either is kicking young gypsies children, even though this is what Congresswoman Sanchez demanded that we do in order to protect ourselves. I only imagine the group of us, with large backpacks, running down the street, Screaming, away from these supposedly dangerous infants.
Today’s dinner was an Italian cuisine and I don’t quite understand the method to their thinking. Pasta, Bread and Lasagna is what we will be eating for the next 5 days straight so wouldn’t it have seemed more efficient to give us like McDonalds? Where are the burgers? It would make us more appreciative of the amazing and delicious dishes we will be paying a fortune for in the lovely towns of Rome and Naples.
Sitting in the warm sun is so amazing. Mostly because the temperature inside the ship is like arctic. I’m not sure why, but it doesn’t make the most comfortable living situations. Sweatshirt inside, bathing suit outside. Still working on ship-life climate I guess.
Tonight we plan on watching another movie together, seeing as we have nothing else to do and we need to calm our excitement for our overly anticipated arrival. The boat sometimes offers showing of Imax movies. We kind of lose the Imax effect when it is formatted to a 15” screen. What were they thinking? Sure the Imax will transpose fine! Good going SAS!
Music is a large part of our days. We listen to music in the morning, during our work outs, we have our I-pods as we lay in the sun, and at night when we have dance parties in our room we let the volume soar on our players. It has been yet another week. And I will recap with these song selections. Again take a listen!
Black and White by Michael Jackson
See its not about races
Just places, faces,
Where your blood comes from
Is where your space is
I’ve seen the bright red door
I’m not gonna spend my life being a color.
In honor of his death and to comment on the situation with Congresswoman Sanchez, it is time to put aside our differences and instead celebrate our individuality. They may sound like the same thing but there is a huge polarity to those two words. We can’t categorize people into certain groups just because of their race, their last name, or their skin tone. People come with multiple, complex layers that make us an individual human being and therefore has no history like the next. “It doesn’t matter if you’re black or whites,” says Michael Jackson. What matters is what you have to offer as a student and as a citizen of this global community.
Journey on from Ragtime
There’s two ships passing
At a distance, Through the darkness
One going from, One going to: America
Strangers sharing the beginnings of a journey
I salute you. God be with you. I will miss you.
In the darkness of the dawn
Journey on!
As we came into Spain it was so amazing to think of the vast ocean we had just traveled across. And also to think of all the others that were traveling either aboard ship or plane in the other direction. The world is constantly in flux trading each other’s citizens for a mutual cultural experience. Whether intended or not; Travel unites us all. And we were headed for one hell of a culture. Spain was exotic, relaxed and an exhausting experience. Yet it has only infused our love for travel even more!
Happy Birthday
**I hope you know the lyrics**
Traveling with your best friend: nothing beats it! Celebrating her 21st birthday with her at the same time is not only magical but truly lucky. I know her mom was sad that she wouldn't be there for such an important time in one's life, but I’m happy to report that we had a happy and safe time in Spain. It was an unforgettable time and we were meant to do this together! I love her. Happy 21st Erika!
Sailing from A New Brain
I’d rather be sailing,
Yes I would, on an open sea
I’d stand at the railing, if I could
Feeling wild and free
The sun is on my neck
The wind is in my face
The water’s incredibly blue
And I’d rather be sailing
Yes I’d wanna go sail.
I complain about the length of the distance between Spain and Italy but I must confess I love it. This song explains it perfectly of how amazing it is and how it makes me feel. Besides the nature of it and the irreplaceable sight of the open sea, I love spending time with Erika and all the others I have grown close to. I am always in anticipation of the next nation but I am also appreciative of the time that I do have here on the ship. I also would rather be aboard a ship then constantly flying. That just freaks me out!
Too Much Time on my hands by Styx
I’m so tired of losing
I’ve got nothing to do
And all day to do it
Well I go out cruising
But I’ve got no place to go
And all night to get there
Is it any wonder I’m not crazy?
Is it any wonder I’m sane at all?
Is it any wonder I’ve got too much time on my hands?
It’s ticking away with insanity!
Procrastination sounds good right about now. I never thought that doing all your work could be harmful to your mental health. And as the song says, I’m going crazy having nothing to do, while everyone else scrambles around to study material or write papers. I just have “too much time on my hands”. It doesn’t help my anticipation and it makes me cranky sometimes. But I guess it is always nice to be prepared. I’d rather be that then rushed and miss out on all these moments I have been able to happily and fully record.
Time IS ticking. Italy is only a night away! Sleep tight.

Once in Rome...O Wait! We aren't there yet!
No More Underwear!
**Note: Post Date June 29, 2009**
Yay! It’s laundry day! And thank god! I have like no more clothes left. Erika doesn’t have laundry for another couple of weeks so she gave me some unmentionables to watch. But seriously my clothes supply is not enough. I knew I should have packed more, but I don’t know if Big Bertha could have taken much more. I’m going to have to go shopping once we arrive in Italy.
ITALY!? I can’t believe it! Probably the place I want to go the most! I am ahead of my goal of making it there by the age of 30. Score! These past couple of days have been quite uneventful besides sailing through the Gibraltar Strait, which served as our gas station. We use tons of gas per nautical mile. It was interesting to see the process of refilling. Of course smoking was not allowed. Smoking is just stupid.
Now we are sailing on the Mediterranean Sea in between Spain and Africa. This positioning on the map is surreal. Take a look at a map and just think of sailing here, it will blow your mind. Homework is catching up to everyone, while I am so ahead of the game, I’m in shock! I have NO homework! I don’t study either, so even though our midterms are tomorrow I’m pretty smooth sailing from here. (ha ha ha get it? Sailing?) If we aren’t doing homework then we are all hanging out, playing games, watching movies and planning.
We booked a hotel in Rome for the first night. A group of 9. The group from Seville plus Danilo and Niko. We might take a day trip to Florence but we have found that not planning every detail actually leaves room for relaxing and flexible days which works with large groups. We are superstar globetrotters! We are all pumped to explore the sights of Italy and to submerse ourselves in their food. I probably won’t stop eating.
The transition back to ship-life has been a sad one. After a taste of traveling in Spain, we don’t want nothing to do with anything else. Yet it is nice to relax and reflect on our time in Spain. We have time to plan for our time in Italy and relax by the pool. It is absolutely gorgeous everyday. I never sit out in the sun, but here (with 50 SPF and my shades of course) I can’t do it enough. I listen to music and just soak in the luckiness of my life. Sometimes I lay in my bed and watch the serene nightly waves crash. The sound is so peaceful and puts me to sleep.
Classes are going well. As I said I’m keeping up with my work quite comfortably and I find some of the material quite interesting. I was happy to find out that all countries in the European Union do not have the death penalty, an issue I feel quite strongly about. Go Humanity!
Having all your homework done lends itself to a boring evening on the boat. I helped the others study by playing a jeopardy style game with flash cards. I also watched Rachel kick butt at Ping-Pong. She beat like 9 people including our student from Italy. For each port that have a student from that particular country board the boat so that we can interact with them as well as use them as a resource for the next country. I told him about my visit to Montemurro and he knew exactly where it was. I look forward to that adventure.
Once again, I can’t properly express how happy I am with the group of friends that I’ve made on the boat. It is quite a large group and we are just all on the same page with attitudes, planning and just plain fun. Tonight we had a dance party in my room. It served as a break from studying. Too much fun!
I still miss my friends from back home though and wish I could share with them this experience more vividly. Shout out to you all! Leave a message if you happen to be following along.
Midterms tomorrow.

Adios!
**Note: Pictures Posted at the bottom of Post***
There was not a cloud in the sky and we were going to the beach! Paradise or just lucky? The girls went shopping in the morning. OF COURSE! And us boys and Rachel got some lunch on the boat and then headed to the shore around 12:30. Nicole and her friend Joe were also along for the ride. Along the way we happened to catch a Spanish wedding which was neat but not anything drastically different. I was wearing my first ever pair of flip flops today and I have to say…they weren’t that bad and came in handy when I had to walk across the burning sand.
“A bird pooped on me today,” Erika tells us as we are sitting on the beach. That girl is the main source of comedy for us. We love it!
I can’t express how freaking cool it was to be swimming in the warm, turquoise ocean while in Spain. It is beyond surreal. I feel as if I’m in a movie. I don’t even like beaches and I had a blast. Later on, me, Kate and Erika sat down for dinner and we discussed how Spain has just flew by. We definitely took everything in, did all we could do, ate all we could eat and still had leisure time in between. But this trip has already turned into something so good that it hurts! Do you know that feeling? It is a place of great appreciation for everything you have and the recognition that you are special to have it, but it is also a catch 22 in that you feel as if this is it! This is the peak of your existence as Kate so kindly put it. Well right then and there we agreed that we wouldn’t allow that. We discussed the possibility of making a strong effort to travel each year. If our friendships are long lasting then we will do it together, even if that means traveling to everyone’s home town. In the United States alone we come from so many different cultures that I’m sure we would all have something to share. I live in New York City, Rachel in Washington D.C., Kate in Chicago, Shannon and Bo are from Colorado, Becca and Kevin both live in Minnesota, and with all those places we are sure to have some great years ahead of us. This will not be the last.
We have to be on the boat two hours before we depart. So we depart at 8:00pm meaning we have to be on the boat at 6:00pm. If you are late you are punished with dock time, meaning: depending on how late you are you have to stay on the boat for a certain amount of time once we arrive in the next port, thus limiting your time in that country. Also sobriety is a desired state on the boat. Semester at Sea does not want students to be reckless drinkers and then bring that atmosphere into a comfortable and safe environment, let alone a learning one. Well as me and Lindsay were walking to the boat we bumped into two Semester at Sea Students who were more than noticeably drunk. Drunk to the point where one of them couldn’t even stand. It was about 5:30 and we told them that they needed to make their way over to the boat. It was about 20 minutes later that these two stumble to the gate. It was a funny sight to see and yet a sad one. I don’t understand how maturity levels fluctuate. What makes someone do the right thing? I still don’t know what happen to them, except that they are on the boat.
For each country we have a guest speaker who boards the ship and then gets off at the next port. When I got back to my room there was an invitation for me on the table. I opened it and I’m invited to a breakfast with Congresswoman Sanchez of California who is now our guest speaker on the way to Italy. I knew automatically why I was invited to such an event and it is because of my demographic, which is not only discriminatory but just plain ignorant. I am of course happy to attend, I have lobbied in Washington D.C. before and am very interested in politics as well as any special event, but this is a huge issue. I understand they want the Congresswoman to be speaking to a demographic that appeals to her issues but isn’t the point of a politician to serve all? How do they know what living situation I am in? I could live in Suburbia (which I do) and a white person could grow up in Mexico with much more culture than I even want. Kate was interested in attending the breakfast and I have all intentions on asking the Dean if that is possible. We need to start progressing forward and stop seeing people as a demographic but as individuals.
On a lighter note, I was able to call my mom today! Yay! At a nominal fee of 0.15 cents a minute I was able to talk to her for 6 minutes. It was so nice to talk to her, but I had no idea what day it was. I asked if she was at work but it is Saturday. We talked about the surreal death of Michael Jackson, which has definitely stirred a strong reaction over here as well as in the US. I always thought he was amazingly talented and only he could do what he does. During a discussion tonight on the boat someone said that he was primarily known as an alleged Pedophile, but people need to sometimes notice people for the good they’ve done instead of the bad, just as I don’t look at Bill Clinton as a cheating man, I look at him as an influential president in our country’s history.
Well taking in the good and the bad, I leave Spain with all its goodness. The laughs, the food, the late nights, the late talks, the immeasurable amount of walking, the bottomless pit of ice cream, the sunny blue skies, the breath taking culture and the historical value of this place shall never be forgotten. (How can I? I’ve written a manuscript!)
Today’s Expenses:
Phone Call to Mom……..1.50 Euros……..$2.17 Dollars
Ice Cream………………2.00 Euros……..$2.90 Dollars
Internet…………………2.00 Euros……..$2.90..Dollars
Total…………………. 5.50 Euros………$7.98 Dollars
Tonight we all sat around and watched the movie Devil’s Wears Prada as we watched the boat pull out of the port of Cadiz, Spain. I think it will always be a bittersweet moment. We treasure our time in one country and look forward to the next.

P.S. That’s All.
Sevilla, Spain and a Birthday!
**Note: Post date is June 26th, 2009**
“Whoa. That mo-pad came out of no where,” exclaims Erika. The mo-pad was parked. I swear she is either the smartest person I know or the dumbest depending on the time of day. But seriously the vehicles here do come out of no where! I can’t stand it. It is unsafe, a nuisance and just plain rude. There are times where you can find all pf us, stuck against the side of a building waiting for a car to squeeze by us and make it through with just enough room. Becca and I almost had dangerous meetings with cars THREE times. However the best was when we were all standing at the crosswalk waiting for our signal to walk. The light was red for the cars and red for us, so neither one of us were moving. We stood at the cross walk for about 2 minutes and still neither one of us had moved. Mind you: this was a large intersection. We were fed up and decided to just risk it and run. As soon as we stepped foot of that curb, the light changed. Five college students with large travel backpacks probably never ran faster or laughed harder. It was a sight to see. The scary thing is, not to scare any of you parents out there, but if one of us fell the sight wouldn’t have been pretty. But they are ruthless drivers here in Spain and that’s all I’m going to say.
Ok they are rude too. I thought Americans were disrespectful! I had no idea. Mistakes aren’t allowed, nor is being foreign. They just sneer at you, or hurry you along. Of course I’m exaggerating, most of our meals have come with cordial service and there was one man on our way back to Cadiz who, on his own accord, asked us if we needed help. We did! It was such a breath of fresh air. I believe in humanity and he showed some today. Thanks guy.
After that long day, we all woke up exhausted, especially Becca, poor thing. I never drink coffee. Never! I don’t even drink caffeine. I stick to sprite and root beer when drinking soda. But it was an emergency AND I was in Spain. David Giess, our guest lecture, said that coffee was amazing. It was! I gulped it like it was water! It was a life saver for the rest of the day. Erika of course had her Starbucks and also managed, since it was her birthday, to get a chicken sandwich at Mcdonalds.
“How long do you think it takes to dust this place?,” asks Kevin. Our plan for the day was to see the largest gothic Cathedral in the world. It was pretty large, I’d say. We walked 35 flights to the top of the 300 foot Bell tower and overlooked the lovely city of Sevilla which we all loved so much. We didn’t want to leave, but they didn’t have any more rooms available at the Oasis. So we perused the Cathedral for a while, took lots of pictures and were on our way. As leaving, two women approached us with leaves in their hands. They shoved the leaves in our hand, spitted some Spanish at us and then proceeded to demand for money. It was beyond strange. We wiggled ourselves out of that situation but this place is just rude.
And lovely at the same time. We had a wonderful lunch overlooking the Alfonso river. We ordered Tortillas. Not the American tortilla but the Spanish tortilla which is more like a potato and egg Quiche. Along with that we had olives, and a lovely lemon drink. It was a gorgeous day as always but sitting next to the river was the most relaxing afternoon by far here. Just before that we were given a tour of a Bull Fighting Ring, which was exciting just because and disturbing for the gruesome and horrific thought of seeing such a thing. I still don’t understand the purpose of such thing, but I guess it is the equivalent to a boxing match in America. Just plain pointless. Who likes violence, raise their hand?
After lunch it was time to leave Seville. It was a sad departure but our shop-a-holics Anonymous (who are Kate and Becca) had to make some stops along the way. Actually they make stops along every way. We can’t get from point A to Point B without someone wanting to buy something. We might have to break them up. They work as a duo. We also had to stop as a collective to get some more ice cream. We have gotten ice cream at least twice a day since we arrived in Spain. It is so good! Can’t wait for Italy where it is going to be even better. We might have to upgrade to three times a day. What do you think?
Before we boarded the train we went to the grocery store to buy some things including the spice Saffron and Princesca. Saffron is supposedly extremely expensive in the states (I wouldn’t know because I don’t cook) But ATTENTION: If anyone would like any Saffron simply say so on the blog or contact me in some way. I can get you some for like 2 Euros. Princesca is like a cookie and a cracker at the same time. It is so delicious yet strange.
On the train back we all relaxed into our chairs, some took naps, some wrote in their notebooks, others listened to music and we all reflected on our time in Sevilla. We miss it already. Also while on the train we all learned each other’s last name. Bo McDougal, Kevin Lenzen, Rebecca Ney (pronounced Nye), Rachael Cohen, and Kate Schnelker-Parks. My name is Anthony Souza.
“This is an amazing start to a birthday dinner,” Erika says as she bites into her bread. Under her request we all went back to Nino’s for Erika’s birthday celebration. Shannon and Lindsay joined us. It was again such a lovely time. Accept Kate and Becca got eel for dinner. GROSS. No I didn’t try it, I just couldn’t bring myself to. Kevin only had one glass of wine, yet was really feeling it! Slow down Kevin. Of course with a birthday celebration comes a special dessert. This special dessert came with a gigantic 7 inch candle. But the problem was, there was nothing to eat the dessert with. Lindsay was kind to ask for a utensil but I guess lost in translation we received a pair of scissors. How do we eat cake with scissors? Maybe it is a cultural thing. Just kidding. We eventually got a spoon.
We were pooped after the day in Sevilla, so after dinner, even though we were dressed so nicely, went back to the boat. On the way back we saw some adorable Spanish children playing with their parents in the streets at 12:00 am. I don’t know about you, but when I was 6 I wasn’t up that late. But it was pretty sad that they were probably going to be up later than we were. We made yet another stop for ice cream (SO GOOD!) and then on to the boat.
When we got back Kevin, Rachel, Becca and I went to the empty piano bar to play some tunes that we picked up in our years. It was quiet hours but we didn’t seem to care. One of the staff members did, but he was vacuuming so I don’t understand why he can make noise and we can’t. Ours sounded prettier. Then we sat on the back deck talking about embarrassing moments and swapping stories. I think me and Kevin did a couple of kart wheels as well. I’m telling you, that wine went straight through him.
Is there going to be any bad night? Because I have yet to have any.

P.S. Don’t cross the street in Spain
The Woman in Black
**Note: Post Date is Thursday, June 25, 2009**
A voluptuous woman dressed in black comes to the small stage, silences the audience with a hissing sound, commands their attention and begins with 2 males by her side, a soloist and a guitar player. The singer with a unique style of vocalizing starts to “sing” or chant a melody, which resembles something of a religious or sacred tone. His singing is joined by the ever so dominant percussion of their hands and feet. This rhythm is complicated and ever-changing. Their foot work is a style of tap but intensified. As their performance continued you could see that they were enjoying themselves, they enjoyed each other’s company and respected one another’s amazing talent. I know for sure that we did! Their bodies, their minds and their hearts all had to be synchronized, not only within their selves but with each other. It was breathtaking. The amount of concentration and effort that is put into these performances, especially when the heat rises, the rhythm speeds up and the relationship between all three components reach a pivotal ending the energy in the room is something I never felt before. I watched the woman’s face closely. Here slick black hair is tied in a pony tail, her face is beyond serious (except when she smiles: she is beyond beautiful) Her face shows passion, discipline and business. She would not allow for any talking and it was reflected in her performance. This performance is called Flamenco. It was something to always remember.
Sevilla, Spain! Ok so I called Cadiz a city. I was wrong. It is more like a town. Sevilla is the place to be! Of course exhausted from our 22 hour day before we boarded the 11:00 am train to Sevilla. What a beautiful ride it was. I’m amazed by the train ride from New York to Albany so anything different was of course going to catch my eye, such as huge wind mills and fields and fields of gorgeous full grown sun flowers. When traveling for extended period of time and just sitting there with each other is definitely the time when you begin to know someone. We were having a great time already. Even though after a rushed morning Erika couldn’t find her Id and had to purchase another one at the grand fee of $25.00. It was bummer because while on the train she found her id in her Camera Case. Good going Erika! We love you still! Seven of us, Erika, Bo, Kevin, Kate, Rachel, Becca and myself were on an adventure with no plans but to explore Sevilla.
We were no longer near the beach so the air was dry and the temperature almost 100 degrees! With packs on back we were ready to walk and find our hostels, only to find that they were across town but we weren’t deterred. We even took it upon ourselves to make some detours! Our first detour was the magnificent (again how many adjectives can I use?) Plaza de Espana which was some sort of period palace and modern military base combined. This place was so expansive and so grand that we couldn’t fathom its creation let alone its purpose. However we took pictures, documented this gigantic sight and continued along with our journey. Along the way we past a Cran festival, otherwise known as a shrimp festival, and we passed a lady selling jewelry on the street. A few of us purchased some and she was so kind enough to suggest a place for lunch. Us being chumps, we went directly their for a bite to eat. Some of us were enthusiastically in love with their salad and others such as myself who ordered an orange juice by mistake with a side of ice cream was not so pleased with this choice of restaurant, but who’s complaining? We are in Spain! Some strange things happened at lunch. A woman came directly to our table with a picture in her hand of a girl carrying a baby and basically demanded money. It was uncomfortable and awkward, even for me and I live in New York City, I’m constantly confronted with people asking for money. But this woman was abrasive and after Kevin denied her money, we think she placed a curse on him. Scary! Well, after our eventful lunch we continued our navigation, led by Cameron a.k.a. Kate, to the hostel.
There it is: Starbucks! She had to have it and so she did. Erika was so content with her viente caramel drink from Starbucks, and that won’t be her last. She was in her glory!
And so were we! We absolutely love Sevilla. We have all agreed that our time in Cadiz was definitely special. It was our first night in Spain, we had a wonderful day of sightseeing and a wonderful night at dinner, but this place was just so alive, so bright and just a more comfortable atmosphere. Maybe because it is more tourist friendly but it still has so much culture hence the flamenco dance!
After a long strip of shops and restaurants, a small chance meeting with Niko, sweaty backs, and almost four hours later we made it to our hostel. Now they call it a hostel, we call it a pretty damn amazing hostel, if not a hotel. We were floored by the service and quality of this place. It is called Oasis Backpacker’s Hostel. It is a chain located all throughout Spain, Erika and I booked it about a month and a half ago just by searching online and boy did we score big time. Erika, Kate, Rachel and I were all placed into a room coincidentally, we didn’t even have to ask, and our room was the equivalent to an apartment! We had a kitchen with a frig, stove, plates, cups and a table. We had a beautiful and clean bathroom, and a quaint view into the city from our 3 large windows. If that doesn’t sound good enough, we had a roof top terrace, a pool, a bar (where we were complimented with a free welcome drink), free internet (which we didn’t use very much unfortunately) and a kind staff to assist us with any questions. All of this for the almost non-existent price of 20.00 Euros. I’ve been in worst hotels than this hostel. And since this place is so amazing, it is fully booked. Becca, Kevin and Bo had to stay at another hostel near by, but we barely noticed seeing as we were always together.
I wanted to take a nap, but shopping seems to be at the frontal lobe for everyone else. So we casually walked around the streets of Sevilla: it was beautiful so I couldn’t complain. Ughh I’m running out of clothes so I bought a 4.00 Euro shirt from H&M. I’m so cultured! Kevin and Bo were excited by H&M because I guess they don’t have them in Minnesota or Colorado, but I have one right in my mall in Albany, NY, let alone 10 in New York City. Ehh. Later on, Kevin and I were almost tempted to hit some slot machines at the local casino, we held strong though. We continued to a grocery store to buy some drinks for the night and then met the girls at Oasis for our Tapas tour facilitated by the hostel.
Tapas are various plates of food such as chicken, steak, potatoes etc. I think it would translate to Americans as an appetizer, but it is a large part of Spanish culture. I didn’t like mine that much: Tenderloin in a Port Wine Sauce, but everyone who ordered the Chicken with Almond Sauce seemed to be very content. I tried some: it was delish!
After our walk back from the Flamenco show, we came across other street performers, a lively nightlife, the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world, and a family from Chicago. They were very nice. Kate is from Chicago so we struck up some conversation. I was distracted and looked up at the sky to see bats! “We got to go,” I exclaim! Eww. Bats!
The clock strikes 12 and it is Erika’s 21st Birthday! So exciting to celebrate your birthday in Spain and with such a cool, laid back group of people. We went back to the hostel to play some games and have a few drinks before we went out to the clubs. Remember: which doesn’t start till 3:00am. At some point in the night the Minnesota accent came up. Both Kevin and Becca are from Minnesota and they are constantly mispronouncing words to my standards such as Boat, Flag, Bag, and Windmill. So we all sat around and tried to do our best Minnesota accent. It was a funny sight but Erika won! Boo! The people in our conjoining rooms were from Canada and were so nice so we invited them to hang with us as well. We come to find out that the woman (I forget her name) went to Troy for High school! What a small world! It was time to the club and Erika says, “I’m going to need a donut before we go”. We never got that donut.
On the way to the club we met a guy, by chance, who is from California and teaches English here in Spain. This intrigued me so much! He said it was really easy to get a teaching job and that he has been loving it! He was hanging with some college exchange students also from the states. I am in love with chance meetings! It makes things so interesting and so fun.
Speaking of fun! The club called Cathedral was so much fun! It was big, loud, active and it was Erika’s birthday! Yay! But brace yourselves. Some guy tried to kiss me! Thank god Rachael was there to protect me. It was the funniest thing this guy comes up to me and just tries to kiss me, Rachel immediately puts her hand on my mouth and drags me away. It looked and felt funnier than it sounds but it was quite hysterical. We don’t understand. It wasn’t a gay club or anything but this guy just seemed like kissing me was the way to go. At 4:30 am it was TIME to go.

Cadiz, Spain
**Note: Postdate: June 24th 2009**
wild cats roam the streets of Spain. I guess they aren’t domestic animals like they are in the states. I don’ know why because I love my cats back home, actually I miss them, especially Stimpy who might as well be a dog. But these cats aren’t fat like him. They are scrawny, and gangly because they have no food and have to survive off of human left overs. I want to give one a home, or pet one even, but they probably aren’t very friendly seeing that they treat them like animals! I tend to treat my cats like people.
The Spanish people have one crazy-ass schedule. Pardon my French (or Spanish rather), But honestly, if I didn’t know that going out dancing didn’t start until 3am I probably wouldn’t have woken up at 6am to catch the sunrise. (Who am I kidding? Yes I would!) We were arriving in Spain: one of the biggest countries in Europe and our first stop on this extraordinary voyage (I’m going to run out of adjectives soon!) I was so excited. People were singing, cheering and just celebrating this great arrival! The rising sun was so welcoming and as we drew closer to land I could only think about one thing: we just sailed the Atlantic Ocean! How freaking cool!? Who needs planes anymore? Water is the way to go!
Except we are all a little too used to the water. Walking on stationery ground is quite strange. I found myself swaying periodically throughout the day especially when I closed my eyes or took a nap. I feel like I’m swaying now. It is so weird that we now have to adjust to the stillness of the earth. I hope we don’t loose our acclamation to the boat though because I refuse to become nauseous again! I napped because I was exhausted. I couldn’t even keep my eyes open by the end of our long afternoon. And I was a bit Cranky. I don’t think Kevin or Bo were up for that side of me. Who is!? I’m a bit of a diva.
The day started with some breakfast, where I had an insightful discussion about the Disney Internship with Danilo, who has already participated in the program. I am always planning ahead. Life doesn’t stop, not even on vacation. It was nice to get someone’s perspective on the program and I’m sure I’ll be asking him more questions about it in the future. Danilo is going to Portugal, that’s where my ancestors are from. It is so surreal that I’m right next door. Kevin, Bo, Erika, Shannon, Nina and I disembarked from the boat (enforced with Sun Screen of course) at about 9:30-10:00am….a long time had passed from 6:00am.We were already four hours into our day and we hadn’t even started. We didn’t have any plans, any tour guide but we hit the streets of Cadiz, Spain.
And what a beautiful, quaint city it is! With alley ways in the middle and big, turquoise beaches along the peninsula. Everything is about in a 20-25 minute walking radius. Including the train station or the Le Tren, which we walked to and bought our 11:00 am ticket for Seville tomorrow morning. I hate waiting in lines, I am extremely impatient and get grumpy. Thankfully I have Kevin, Bo and Erika to keep me occupied. On the way to the train station, Burger King caught Erika’s eye. She can’t resist. However Bo was not having it! He refused that any of us go to a fast food restaurant during the entirety of the trip. I stand by his decision but Erika was glued to the establishment. Bo took it into his own hands to literally carry her away from BK and continue forward to the train station. We are so excited to explore other parts of Spain, seeing as we basically covered the entire city already.
While walking around and sight setting in the afternoon, Erika, Becca and I started to talk about how much we missed our families and how much we wish they were with us on this amazing trip. I believe that one can have an amazing time by their self but it is when you share your experiences that it truly becomes worth it. This blog is a true testament to that. I am more than happy to share my experiences with anyone who wishes to follow along. We connect through experiences and I treasure each and every one … both the good and not so good.
In the afternoon it was just me, Becca and Erika. Everyone else was on a trip sponsored by SAS. We walked along the beach, which was beautiful and had some topless girls. Oo0o la la!
We walked through some amazing parks including the Public Garden called Parque Groves. Why we don’t have these in the states? I don’t know. We of course have the botanical gardens but they cost money for one and I’m sure they aren’t as exotic and adventurous as these. This park had waterfalls, ponds, bridges, caves, exotic trees and intricately shapes plants. It was beautiful! I also took some pictures of the impressive and old cathedrals. I can’t wait to share them with Papa. I’m sure I’ll see an immeasurable amount during this trip.
The alleys are lined with shops, similar to those in the US and restaurants which are open at particular hours and have a slightly different service decorum than we do. First, lunch is from 2:00-4:00, and dinner isn’t until 9:30pm. It is rude for them to bring you your check, you must ask for it, and the Spaniards sit for lunch or dinner for hours on end.
“They better have something good today, or I’m going to Burger King,” Says Erika.
To save money we ate lunch and “dinner” on the explorer (The Apple Crisp was mind blowing!) Later, a group of us went out for a evening bite of pizza and Sangria. Now we have added Niko (With his suave hair), and the lovely new member of the group Lindsay. We are in SPAIN!
This was strange: Someone just came up to a table and took people’s food from the table next to us! What on earth? He just took it and walked away. I’m sure they were in shock, because we certainly were!
Anywho, The sangria was so delicious, so cheap and sweet: just the way I like my wine, or any alcoholic beverage for that matter. The meal was good and cheap, but more importantly the time there was precious. Once again we were enjoying each other’s company, but this time in Spain! It was here that I realized how truly over-rushed we are in America. These people sit for hours to eat a meal, where we on average take a half an hour. Why!? Even when we have full days off we try to cram as much as possible into it and are immediately jumping from one thing to the next. We need to just relax.
I say that even as we rush to find the nightlife in Cadiz. When I mean find…I mean search and scavenge the deep, dark alleys of Cadiz. We get down and dirty and asked locals where the happening places were, because from our initial sight, the town was DEAD! So through the twist and turns of the alleys we eventually found the bar, Nahu. It was way to crowded and with Semester at Sea students, who at this point in the trip we are kind of sick of seeing. We want to be where the culture is and experience some true Spanish life, not just replicate our parties from the boat and place them in Spain, so we left. And thank god we did because we (meaning Bo) ended up finding a Salsa Bar!
I loved it! This type of dancing is so fun, so communal and I think a wonderful part of Spanish culture. Watching 20 people in unison doing this complicated foot work was just so exciting and impressive nonetheless. Lindsay, Shannon and ERIKA (the same one who was hesitant to participate in belly dancing) were all brave souls and jumped right in! They were all pretty good! I could get it down for maybe 2 seconds and then I’d lose it! Watching was a little more enjoyable for me. I’ll stick to Broadway, Thank You. Kevin even danced at this bar. The sarcastic, old man that he is actually showed off some moves tonight. Love that Kid!
Anyway, the night was fun…long but fun! Kate and Becca talked with two locals for like the entire night, since they know Spanish. Having friends that know Spanish is going to be extremely useful for our travels here. Kate, Becca, Rachael and Bo all studied it in High school and lucky us they are all traveling with us to Seville. Through translation, the locals asked me what I thought of Spain before I came and I told them I never thought I would come. It is true. I never had any strong desire to plan a trip to Spain. Nothing interested me here, but now coming, it is truly beautiful and a fun culture to experience.
Erika and I had a wonderful, peaceful walk back to the boat together and we talked about our opportunity to study abroad and how amazing it is once again. But Erika does truly hold traveling dear to heart. She has always loved researching different places of the world and I am so glad that I can share this love with her and even more, do it with her! I love her! We had a great time together today!

P.S. Why don’t they like cats?
wild cats roam the streets of Spain.

I need Sun Tan Lotion. It's an Emergency!
“Make sure to bring your latex covering for your taliwag,” the doctor says as he gives us his closing advice before we embark into Spain. I swear everyone is a comedian on this boat. There was a detailed meeting about departure procedures including everything from sexual safety, as you can witness, and the fun stuff including what to do around the area. We dock at about 8:00 am tomorrow and simply plan to just explore our port city, Cadiz (KA-dees) for the first day. By we I mean the following: Erika, Kevin, Bo, Becca, Shannon, Kate (who looks like Cameron Diaz), myself and probably some others. We are about 300 nautical miles away. It shall be an adventure.
There was a belling dance class today taught by the lovely and intriguing Nicole. I think she rocks and she was a great teacher. Shannon was immediately signed up for this event, Erika on the other hand was quite hesitant. I can comment on her dancing but I’ll save that for later. She gave it a try but I was too late to take any pictures. Don’t worry I didn’t participate (ew gross) I just wanted to document it and I did with Shannon and Nicole.
It was the weirdest phenomenon today in Global Music. We were watching a clip of Peter, Paul and Mary (I think) and I’ve heard of them but have never really listened to them. I admit their image is quite corny and contrived but the music wasn’t all that bad and their harmonies and skills were quite impressive. (O wait Peter, Paul and Mary? Aren’t they the carpenters? O Nevermind) Well it was an older group singing Folk Music and our teacher, Dan Jones, asked the class what they thought of the clip afterwards. Out of the blue this older white man, a lifelong learner, who was probably in his sixties and alive when this music was popular loudly said “this is crap! This is the kind of crap that kept the African American music from growing in this country. I hate this”. I couldn’t believe it, especially because I happened to like the clip and I’m 21 in 2009. Of course I’m not a huge lover of hip hop, but I am respectful to most art forms. It was a bizarre duality of age and opinion.
“I’m so hungry!”
“When aren’t you Erika?” I ask. She is always hungry.
Essays…are they to induce thought? Well…regardless I had to write one. It’s done now but lord knows I did not want to do it. Everyone else is now scrambling to finish theirs before we dock for Spain. Who wants homework lingering over there head as we explore a foreign country? Not I. Procrastination has yet to conquer my time.
Essays remain an enigma, but I know for sure that the open vast ocean induces thought. I sat there, with my shades of course, listening to music enjoying the warm breeze, the relaxing blue waves and the blazing rays of the sun. By the way…I hate getting darker. Hate it. When I smile I look like the Cheshire cat from Alice in Wonderland. I need to start using sun tan lotion, it is an emergency! Well with my essay finished and while listening to music, I had the time to look back on my week at sea. Yes, it has been a week. At times it seems shorter and others longer but nonetheless it has been some crazy seven days aboard this ship. In light of my love for music, I will recap the week with a play list that I think encompasses the spirit of my main happenings. Type them into you tube, buy them on itunes, do what you may, but they are great: relaxing and uplifting at the same time.
1. Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough By Michael Jackson
My goal on this trip was to “ not stop until I’ve had enough” and in some ways that ideal still holds true, but after a humbling ship life and the refreshment of meeting such great people, I have realized that it is important to cherish and appreciate the moments you have to their fullest extent and to not be distracted and separated by the anticipation of your next sight. I am dedicating my time this summer to be a traveler, not a tourist. But in life, I’m a strong believer: “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough!” It is what has motivated me to take this trip in the first place and it is what will keep me going long after it is over.
2. Sweet Potato Pie By Ray Charles and James Taylor
O Lord I feel fine today.
Walking on Cloud 9 today.
I’m over that line today.
Happiness is finally mine today.
I Guess I’m just a lucky guy.
And here I’m bought to tell you why…
Everyday has been completely blissful. I can’t express how appreciative I am of this relaxing, exciting, humbling, and experiential opportunity. There is seriously no good reason to complain. I have been blessed with a wonder of the world many aren’t graced with: The open ocean. I am meeting some amazing people as well as spending time with my best friend of 10 years. I am being pampered and being allowed to really appreciate life. I say “life” in loose terms, as I understand this is not reality but a dream.
3. Be Ok By Ingrid Michaelson
I just wanna be ok, be ok, be ok
I just wanna be ok today.
I just wanna feel today, feel today, feel today.
In actuality, I didn’t want to feel anything the second day aboard the ship. The sea sickness epidemic had struck and we were all feeling it one way or the other. Some worst than others. Some had to get shots, like Kate, some used patches, like Kevin who may becoming addicted, some pills like Erika and …me: nothing! We all had a haze over our faces. I just wanted to be ok!
4. Ready to Run By Dixie Chicks
I feel wind blowing through my hair.
I’m gonna be ready this time
Oh yea Ready Ready Ready Ready
Ready to Run
All I’m ready to do is have some fun.
Every morning I run two miles. I made it my vendetta about a month ago. I thought Erika was going to join, but that fell through. Don’t worry Bo is a great running partner. I don’t run for long or else I lose weight drastically. I’m simply trying to remain in shape to prepare for my return to New York which consists of quite a hectic schedule. Can’t wait to take my run around the scenic routes of Spain.
5. Lady in Spain By Ingrid Michaelson
I am a lady in Spain
I am a lady from mars
And I can unscrew the stars.
I can be anything that I see
I can be anything that, anything that I see.
I can do anything that I want to
I can do anything, anything my heart tells me to.
I truly believe in these lyrics. I am very proud of who I am and who my friends and family have influenced me to be. I feel so empowered and so free traveling the Atlantic ocean and left to explore these foreign wonders that I have only existed on paper. I am packed and ready to go. I’m “ready to run”. I’m ready to “not stop until I get enough,” I’m ready to “be ok,” and I’m ready to “do anything my heart tells me to”. “I guess I’m just a lucky guy.”
Thanks for reading.

French Fries and Ice Cream!
It is so relaxing sitting on the deck soaking up the warm sun. Kevin and I did this as we did our homework. (By the way Summer School sucks!) I have to admit, sitting around doing relatively nothing: not having to worry about driving, running errands, going to work, or doing anything of the ordinary daily routine is quite serene. I advise you take a whack at it. I wasn’t very routinely today. I accidentally slept through my daily run and breakfast. O darn.
Erika won’t stop! Every moment she’s anticipating the next leg of the voyage. Her excitement gets the best of her. Slow down Erika. By the way…Erika doesn’t know what lackadaisical means, but I learned that word from my grandmother. Thanks Nana.
“Is that all you’re gonna eat? Cheese?,” Casey asks Erika. I swear for a picky eater I fear what will be available for her in these foreign countries. Of course for the sense of protection I must tell you that I am exaggerating her diet a bit. She eats much more than just cheese. She does have her protein bars. No….seriously, she does eat. It was the best lunch ever today: French fries and ice cream. I had two plates of fries and a double serving of ice cream. American Food is good!
But Spanish food sounds amazing! Tonight there was a seminar on what to eat in Spain and our guest speaker, David Geiss, was an entertaining force for the evening. He is probably over qualified. He was knighted by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos. He told a funny story about how he was on Jeopardy in 1978 for the 10th Anniversary even before Trebech was the host. His wife had signed him up, without him knowing, just so they could get a full set of Encyclopedias, which supposedly every contestant was compensated with. He was such a good speaker and active storyteller, I was almost laughing to tears. Professor Geiss talked about what not to eat such as bull testicles and barnacles, but some things I do look forward to trying is Churros and Tapas. The eating schedule of the Spaniards is quite unorthodox compared to American culture. They constantly eat throughout the day and don’t convene for dinner until 9:30-10:00. Only one more day until Spain.
Today we met again for the Special Events Committee to discuss the success of the dance and any modifications to make in the future. We also decided our next special event, which will be Casino Night. We will see how that pans out. It isn’t until August 5th. Another activity tonight was our Block Party. We had a rendez-vous in the hallway to get to know each other. (Awkward. It isn’t the best way to meet each other. The questions are contrived and the answers are repetitive.) Each floor is separated into a certain sea, The Adriatic, The Black, The Red, The Baltic etc. (You know the seas we are traveling through) All the seas compete against each other in the Sea Olympics (held in August) The winners get to walk off the boat first once we dock in Norfolk. That is quite a prize. Go Adriatic!
We ended the night with a fun evening of Apples to Apples! Every play before? It is a fun pass time. It is just a game to show your sense of humor and learn everyone else’s. We now sit in a room together spending time, laughing, sharing, and just enjoying one special ride. I can wait for tomorrow, because tonight is just enough. Good Night.

Good Night.

Is that the real time!?
At last we don’t have to turn our clocks forward today. We were all so exhausted throughout the day. I even put my shirt on backwards, I was that tired. Being in such a close community, you tend to stay up late just talking away and before you know it, its 2:00 am and you have to wake up at 8:00am to run. AHH! Well not Erika, not only does she not get up to run (as she said she would), but she goes to bed at like 11:30. I mess around with her a lot and call her a slacker! But she isn’t. I love her.
“I don’t like any of the food. But this is good,” Erika says as she nibbles on her 5 cubes of cheese. She is fed up with the constant selections of Rice, Pasta and Potato that results in a 99% carbohydrate diet. I don’t mind, but I eat anything and everything. I had lamb for the first time today. It was good. But I felt weird eating it. I felt like I was eating an animal. I mean chicken is an animal but Lamb is such a pretty word. Weird.
Being so tired I had to take a nap. So I did.
Tonight was the dance. There was quite a turn out. The light system in the Union was really impressive. I was the Committee Chair and, I have to say, I pulled off the first even pretty well. There were refreshments served, posters and balloons, and a student volunteered to be the DJ and Bill rocked it out. But of course Erika unfortunately wasn’t able to make it to the dance because she was stuck doing duty again on Deck 7 where Pub Nights are held. What a sad existence. I keep telling her that this is unfair and she must speak up. I hope she does. Don’t worry I visited her from time to time. The dance was broadcasted on the television in all the rooms and let me tell you there were some crazy and hilarious moves out there on the dance floor. Not to mention the rocking of the boat added some interesting slides.
I bought a jacket before I left for Halifax. I was with my mom and she thought it looked like something Michael Jackson would wear, but I loved it. And guess what? It is coming in good use. The nights are quite windy and cold and it also doesn’t help when your day was dampened by a cast of clouds either. The coat is warm, stylish and everyone likes it. So I give that purchase an A+.
Still no whales today. The watch isn’t that strong but in our roommate agreement we agreed that it was mandatory that we notify the others if we see a whale or any other marine life out in the ocean. But this isn’t Sea World. This is as real as it gets. That roommate agreement, which is meant to keep the space safe and comfortable for everyone was kind of superfluous in our case for we are already so close and so easily compatible with one another. So we basically filled out the agreement with funny information hoping that the Dean’s office will get a kick out of it. I love my roommates! I have to say I’ve never had a horrible roommate experience. The worst was when my roommate didn’t talk to me for like the entire year. I hope he isn’t reading this.
Tonight we played cards once again. A crazy character named Thomas joined us, along with Mercedes, Josh and Danilo who all speak Spanish, so we kind of racked their brains to prepare us for the language barrier in Spain. Also amongst the group tonight was Kevin and Rachel (remember she is cool) I just got back from Erika’s room where her and Shannon are watching Legally Blonde the musical. Erika seriously has watched that hundreds of times. No exaggeration. She turns 21 in 4 days. We arrive in Spain in 2. Are you excited? I am.

We are not alone.
I saw land for the first time today in 3 days. These islands were a magnificent sight to see. They were a tint of red with large beautiful mountains and small towns located near sea level. There were two of them and we were sailing right in between. Supposedly we have officially entered European Territory. Goodbye US. But those poor island people. What do they do living in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean? It was comical seeing everyone flock to either side of the boat just to see land. I guess we were desperate and needed to know something else was out there. Well there is and something more than islands. The Atlantic Ocean was hoping with activity today.
Today we saw dolphins. Many of them. I am one of the lucky few to get video of these jolly creatures. Well at least I think they are jolly. They swim so vibrantly around the ship and constantly leap and jump in the air. It was beautiful and I’m so happy to have seen them. I’m still waiting for that whale though. Where is he? Ha ha. Also in the neighborhood were other ships, whether they were cruise lines or cargo boats, I don’t know, but it was reassuring to know that we weren’t the only crazy ones to cross the entire span of the Atlantic.
Eating breakfast outside on the Atlantic Ocean is just a serene pass time and one I never thought I’d be able to enjoy. The day was a simple one, with a routine in motion and classes underway it is basically a time to relax and enjoy each others company. More games, more nights on the top deck and just more of a community all together. A group of girls were dancing to Beyonce and old school music while we enjoyed our several card games. All in all we are having a great time. With late night talks and the constant talk of Spain and our arrival we are just all in an array of excitement. Rachael is cool, I spent some time with her tonight. Danilo I met in Halifax and we started talking some more tonight. People are beginning to open up even more as time settles.
I miss home. But my home here is a comfortable one. My room is always clean and always a peaceful place to come back to. As I sit in this quiet room (my roommates are asleep) I think of the importance of travel. Travel is the thing that has made everything possible more or less. Travel establishes communication, communication creates an exchange of ideas, the sharing of ideas induces growth, and that growth is what amounted to the communities we witness today. Without the travels of Chris Columbus and the greats that traveled before and after him, the United States wouldn’t exist. Without the travels of the miners and the workers of the late 1800s, early 1900s we wouldn’t have states such as California. Traveling is such a vital element to civilizations as we know it. If we simply isolated ourselves from the rest of the world, or even from each other, we would stifle ourselves and ultimately remain static in all areas. So yes this voyage serves as a vacation and an amazing opportunity, but it also serves as an act of humanity. Learning about the world and the many things it has to offer will only enrich our lives and hopefully strengthen and further mold our micro-communities.
This time change is catching up to all of us. We turn our clocks ahead once again. It is now 2:37am here, making it 9:37 pm or earlier there. Stay tuned. Only 3 more days.

Is Anyone Out there!?
“Why did we go this way!?” Erika asks as we leave to go back to rooms but via the windy, moist deck. This girl has been complete entertainment for me thus far. There have been many times in these 4 short days in which we have just sat and laughed. We are really enjoying each other’s company as always. But, unfortunately due to her work study position as an R.A. she had to “supervise” deck 7 where they hold “Pub Nights” to make sure students weren’t bringing alcohol to other parts of the ship. This is absolutely an absurd job and should not fall under the jurisdiction of an “R.A.” who aren’t even supposed to be “real” R.A.s. Nevertheless, Erika called before hand to make sure that her duties would not interfere with the night life on the boat and yet they seem to be doing just that. Anyways, after a fun evening of playing “Apples to Apples” with some new friends, I went to visit Erika at the end of her shift. I come up the stairs to fine a senile figure of a woman with a hood over her head staring into space. It was Erika. She was wet, cold and miserable, but boy…what an hysterical sight. Don’t worry I have pictures =)
Capture the flag was turned down! What a shame? We decided to hold a dance this Sunday instead, which should be fun. It will provide a chance for us to really celebrate together the time of our lives and release some of our excitement. I am on the music committee and somewhat in charge…I don’t know how that happened but I don’t mind. Whether you believe it or not, I’m pretty shy around people who I don’t know, at least in a dancing setting. So I’m not sure how outgoing I’ll be Sunday night, but fingers crossed. I always have Erika =) The name of the dance is “Rock the Boat”
And “Rock On!” This morning was a hit! I did not feel sick at all, in fact the entire day I felt great and the boat was rocking like crazy with the 10 foot waves we were sailing through. I can’t believe we are STILL at sea in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. I just wish someone would sail by so that I could wave “Hi” and at least know that someone else was out there. It is quite eerie not knowing what lies beyond. Some people said they saw cruise ships and WHALES! I want to see a whale. I hear they come out in the early morn, so that is now on my list of things to do.
Along with the mundane: Eat Breakfast. Run. Then Class: Today we discussed the layout of the Mediterranean Sea and it is so freaking cool that I will be amidst the Black Sea and be able to see the Nile River in Africa. These sights are things I never expected to see and it is beyond surreal that my home is sailing toward these destinations right now as I write this.
My mom called me last night to share her excitement with me about “So You Think You Can Dance” And the crazy Mary Murphy. We love her. But how crazy is it that she called her son, who is sailing the Atlantic Ocean, to share that!? I know technology is overbearing at times, but come on! That is just plain cool! And I loved it. Of course it was late here, so I wasn’t as quite enthusiastic but she knows I appreciated it. Thanks mom!
The group of us booked some more trips today including a trip to Delphi in Athens, a hike in Turkey, and me and Erika are looking into a Jeep Safari for Bulgaria! This trip is freaking AMAZING! To all you older folks out there who think this is experience is out of reach, shut up and get up! There are 80 year olds in my class, cruising right along with me! If possible I encourage everyone to take this opportunity, young or old, rich or poor! Do it! We can talk if you’d like and I’ll work it out for you.
Met some more cool people tonight and the list is sure to grow: Nikko, Jen, Eric, Allison, Anna, Rachael, Heather, another Jen (we’ll call her the cute one), and have I mentioned Billy? He is fun! This will help me to not only remember their names but introduce them as well just incase they show up in the future, which I’m sure they will! No one can leave or enter the boat for another 4 days. And counting…
We turn our clocks forward AGAIN! Sleep Tight.

Navigational Issues? Huh?

It is one amazing and intriguing sight to walk out on the deck and be surrounded by 360 degrees of water. It is daunting yet liberating. It has been three days and yet I am still in awe of this unfathomable experience I am having. I will most likely never cease to be obsessed with this adventure and am excited for the next two months.
Every evening on the ship they hold seminars to further prepare us for this larger than life embarkment. Tonight was a seminar on how to maximize your trip. The main thing I took from this lecture, besides to maxamize, was to not be a tourist, but to be a traveler; To live in the moment, talk to the natives and take your time to breathe, smell, and simply be in these amazing worlds that we are blessed to be in. I will take the pictures I must and then pack it away so that it can be my bare eyes (besides my contacts of course) witnessing the wonders of the world. They also placed emphasis on the relationships that we will make during this special time. One of the alumni recently was married and one of her friends that she met on the 1996 voyage was her matron of honor. Everyone reacted with endearment. I am already traveling with one of my favorite people, but the others I have met such as Kevin, Bo, Shannon and more have already been a joy to be around; full of life, energy and a great sense of humor that lends itself to some fun times.
Today started with a sickly morning. I felt great last night, but every time I wake up I seem to have to readjust to the motion of the boat once more. (I say boat but I guess some are particular that it is a ship) The ship was actually more steady today. The sky was clear unlike the cloudy, grim covering we had yesterday and the temperature a lot warmer. Bo and I had breakfast this morning with the Doctor and his wife. They were a pleasure and she tried to make us eat chocolate scones, but I unfortunately wasn’t up for it. After a run (full of twist and turns due to the rockiness of the ship) I headed to my first day of classes. Overall the classes weren’t much different than classes held at any other university, however with a glance out the window that all changes. It is always rewarding to be able to learn but lets be honest, I am too excited to think about reading and papers. Even though I have been keeping up on my work and have even jumped ahead thanks to the motivation from Erika. The main thing is to keep up on the work and not fall behind.
Global Studies is a class to understand about the Mediterranean and the entirely separate world it represents. The entire student body takes this course at once in the large meeting room called the Union. Many of us have to take seats on the floor and the teacher has a wireless microphone as he teaches the class, along with his four teaching assistants. He is energetic and bubbly, but at 9:20am not many of us are on the same page.
Global Music is learning how to observe and appreciate the different music of the world though the people living it. We watched a clip from David Letterman of a Tuva Throat singer named Ondar who could sing 4 notes simultaneously. I have a feeling we have some interesting things ahead of us.
And my business class about the European Union is perhaps my favorite. The professor is witty and interesting and the course is about the different life styles of the Europeans and the creation and foundation of this new governing system called the European Union. (I say new but it has been in the works for decades). He gave us a Wall Street article today which talked about how Europeans are allowed 35 sick days, and on average workers took 11.5 sick days throughout the year. Americans only take about 4.5. What!? That’s some crazy stuff. Maybe we should move to Europe?
Erika and I are in all the same classes, so after Global Music we had lunch together with Bo and some other girls. (I forget their names)…o Becca annnd …nope I forget the other one. Anyways during lunch, which is usually an overload of carbs and salad and some sort of meat, an announcement was made by the Assistant Dean, but it was absolutely hilarious. First she said it was Wednesday. It’s Thursday and second, she said that all Bridge Tours were cancelled due to navigational issues. Now I’ve never driven a boat before (ship rather) but how hard is it to navigate? Did they lose their Map Quest directions? Were they supposed to take a left at the next stop sign? Well at least my tour isn’t scheduled until Saturday, hopefully those issues will be cleared up by then. After lunch it was time to READ! I read. The end. About 60-80 pages later it was nap time.
Dinner was interesting. Bo is taking a human sexuality course so some of the conversation lent itself to that topic. We also found ourselves discussing Tape worms. I was beside myself. Yuck!
There was a meeting for the Special Events Committee today. We made many suggestions including a film festival, capture the flag (that was mine!), dances, and other fun activities that we can incorporate during the voyage. I hope that capture the flag is a possibility. Stay tuned for that development.
With the warm weather, it made for a wonderful night on the top deck where the bar and pool is; almost everyone was there and ready to socialize and of course drink. I again, didn’t have anything. It doesn’t interest me that much. But Erika, Shannon, Kevin and I were having an enjoyable time, extending ourselves to meet others and trying to remain standing as the ship rocked from side to side. Shannon these past couple of days has expressed her strong desire for a burger, I too joined her in that indulgement. (Is that a word?) So we had a burger. It was just what I needed. Not that I don’t love my pasta and potatoes but nothing replaces some ground beef.
Planning doesn’t seem to cease. We are still finalizing our plans for Spain and other ports such as Greece and Turkey. It is exciting because you meet people along the way with either new ideas or the desire to join your plans. Bo and Kevin might be joining us on our excursions in Spain as well as Greece. I really like them! They are so easy to be around. Lucky me, I get to live with them. Conserving money while doing all these trips is the challenge. But the faculty seems to be very helpful, as I said, in preparing us for these road blocks.
We lose yet another hour tonight. At least it is gradual and not all at once. I pray for a healthy morning.
5 days.

P.S. I bought a Semester at Sea sweatshirt today. $50.00 bucks. Mom don’t have a heart attack. It is nice, nicer than my NYU one, and its worth it. Remember: Once in a lifetime.

Rock-a-By....ok stop!
It just has to stop rocking!!! The boat, or ship rather, is so unstable. I’m not sick, just uncomfortable, but it is bothering everyone and its driving me nuts that we have an extremely mobile home for the next week. At least it’s a luxurious one and it is always a fun seeing Erika stumble around the ship, she ran into a wall today.
Today was a more eventful day than expected. With an early run with Bo, followed by a rather extensive discussion of Identity and Violence, my morning was already quite different than anything I’d be doing at home. Kevin got sick this morning. Sad Face. He has been asleep for most of the evening as well. I tell you this ship is treacherous. Following the discussion was superfluous orientations loaded with information that we either already knew, or had read before hand, so we either opted out, or slept through them. Unlike me, I know, but I wasn’t feeling so hot. Carbs seems to help, we found that out after eating lunch. After lunch we took some glorious naps. Again, unlike me, but why not….a nap by the ocean with some nice relaxing music?…doesn’t hurt….also the motion doesn’t effect you when your lying down.
After a nap we ( Erika, Bo, Kevin, Shannon, Kate, and I) had dinner. Kate hasn’t been feeling well at all and ultimately threw up on our way back from dinner. Don’t worry she didn’t eat anything, and she had a convenient little bag that the ship provides us with. After dinner (with Kate in bed) we picked up our beverage vouchers, which regulates our alcohol intake on the ship. I have nothing to worry about for I most likely won’t drink at all on the ship, not to mention alcohol mixed with this insane motion; not a great combination. We also signed up for a tour of the Bridge: where the Captain is and where they steer this thingy. I’m excited for that. I remember I went on this boat in the Hudson River with my family when I was younger and I was able to steer the boat for a while. I still have the picture.
Pictures!!! I apologize in advance for the lack of pictures. I only have a limited amount of internet available and uploading pictures takes up time, so I think I’m waiting for our arrival in Spain to upload the pictures. But stay tuned. There are some good ones of Erika! =) Also, apparently my mom called sprint and they provided her with a plan that enables her to call me for some rate. Sounds good to me! I prefer talking to her rather than chatting or emailing. We never have done it before, so it feels weird to start now.
As the night went on we were able to sign up for some clubs/groups that were on the group. I of course signed up for the Special Events Committee and am so excited to jump into that! I love planning and coordinating so that is right up my alley! As well as performing so hopefully there will be some type of talent show. Speaking of which, I met another student from NYU/ Tisch tonight. His name is Dan, and he is a film studies major who will be graduating after the SAS Program and then will be living in New York afterward. It is truly amazing who you meet. I also met cool people such as Grace, Billy, Jess, Aubrey, and Ian. We were all playing games tonight such as Scrabble, Taboo and the ever popular: cards.
We lose an hour tonight on the boat. So as the night comes to an end, I respond to a couple of emails, write this blog, and head to the safe haven of my bed. Six Days and counting.

Big Bertha and her travels.
You should have seen me lugging my large 67 pound suitcase down the stairs of the Hostel. I call her “Big Bertha”. Thank god she is now all unpacked. Anyways, our walk to the port at 11:00am was a solemn one. It was me, and the three other guys that stayed in my room that night, Danilo, Robert and Tyler, as mentioned in the last post. I didn’t know when Bo was leaving but assumed he was going to make his way. As we were walking toward the never-ending line at the port, someone, small and skinny, came running towards me…Erika!!! It was so nice to see her. I hadn’t talked to her since Saturday. She looked all official in her Semester at Sea gear and special lanyard given to Work Study students. I can’t express how happy I am that we are doing this together. We chatted for a bit and she was quite happy that I was there, with luggage in hand. (So many people have lost their luggage on this trip thus far…can’t imagine the stress for them. I wouldn’t know what I would do without big bertha.) Erika gave me and the others our name tags and we were on our way to waiting in an hour long line to board our future home.
Our home: The MV Explorer! What a luxurious sight! I’m sure to have a blog all about the features of the boat, but lets just say that it includes a gym, a spa, a salon, a pool, a bar, a piano lounge, a mini-theater, a souvenir shop, a bookstore, a library, a basketball court, two dining halls, a health center, a counseling center, several classrooms, and I’m sure more that I have forgotten to mention. I hand over my passport to the authorities of Semester at Sea (They better keep it safe) I receive my ID and head on the boat. (In my ID I look like a drag queen. I hate it! And what’s worst, they have the same picture in glass so that everyone can see!) I go to my room which is on the fourth deck (4043) and what do I find, or rather who, Bo! the same Bo from the Hostel and a night out in Halifax, is going to be my roommate for the next 67 days! Out of about 150 guys, what is the possibility that we would be roommates!? I’m so happy! Our other roommate, Kevin, is also fun to be around. We seem to be all be the same type of person which is always reassuring in a living situation. (Not that I don’t try to get along with everyone) The three of us have been having fun together, exploring the ship and talking etc.
Back to my room! I’m in love =) It is so cozy with a large window overlooking the sea. I am sleeping in a bunk bed, (and it folds…so cool) it comes with a gorgeous view outside that window so I don’t mind. In the room, there is a small desk, 2 dressers, a mini- frig, a television that shows our positioning during our trip, our very own, clean bathroom, a small glass table, two chairs, two closets with many compartments, all with ambient lighting, room service, and our very own lifejacket! Jealous!? I’ve never lived so good! They even do our laundry! =)
After admiring the room, and after lunch the three of us came back to unpack. I didn’t bring enough pictures and I’m bummed. Bo has a flag of Colorado which adds some color to our ever so beige room. After situating everything in its place and pushing “Bertha” underneath the bed, we were ready to go, but first, a Life Boat Drill! UGH! The process was a tedious one and tiresome. We were all pooped. Let’s hope those drills remain just that though. After the drill it was time to disembark from Halifax. We reconvened with Erika and her roommates and headed to the 6th and 7th decks of the ship to wave goodbye to the shore. Erika had intentions on videotaping but had some ditsy trouble as usual! We solved her simple issues and am excited to show you some of her footage soon.
After an exciting departure we all headed in to eat dinner. Oh the food! Well I think it is good. Tacos for lunch, and pork chops and pasta for dinner, and mousse for dessert. It is, once again, luxurious. Ha ha ha, but honestly we ate dinner next to the window looking out on the sunny blue sky and the Atlantic ocean, how many people get to do that!? And it isn’t like college where you have to get your own drinks and drop off your own dishes, they do that for you too! I can’t get over the treatment. After dinner we all ( Me, Erika, Bo, Kevin, Erika’s roommates Shannon and Kate) decided to explore the boat! It was a fun time, but some people experienced sea sickness. I didn’t though! Phew. Kevin is using the patch this time and is going to see how it goes after that. They offer free sea sickness medication on the boat, meaning I didn’t have to buy it, Damn!
Amidst that all, My mother called me. I don’t know how she did since we are international without an international plan, but I guess a mother always finds a way. Nevertheless, It was beyond nice (oh wait! my mother just called me again, while I am writing this. The service is basically non-existent so I couldn’t hear her) to talk to her and tell her I was on the boat! She was excited. I miss her! It is only going to get harder…
Also amidst all that we had some introductions the faculty and staff aboard the ship, they were funny and seemed to be full heartedly invested in this voyage which was nice. I also went to Erika’s room. She wouldn’t even let me look at her protein bars, what a dork! Her room is basically the same as mine, except it is all the way down by the engine of the boat, which isn’t comforting for an already disturbed sleeper. Ha ha ha. I wish her luck. I actually just called her about 20 minutes ago and she was trying to do just that. It was 10:30. Ha ha ha.
A great living situation, great treatment and service, great people, and my best friend equals an incredible time! One week until we arrive in Spain. . Most likely I won’t be recapping on tomorrow, it is a full day of orientation and will probably be a bore, but we’ll see.
I’m at sea!

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Well $83.oo later I arrive in Halifax....almost hassle free. Thank God. It was a small plane! I HATE small planes. Sarah...she sat next to me, she too was going to Semester at Sea and she too didn't like small planes. The adventure has begun.
It all started at the Albany train station where the train was coming in a little late. Not by much but I was freaking out! I had Destin, my brother, telling my mom to leave and me stressing about me catching a 2:00 Shuttle to the airport in Manhattan. Finally the train arrives. I still make it to New York on time, only to find out that I left my USB at home.(damnit) I rush to the corner of 33rd St. and 7th Ave. otherwise known as Penn Station, to find the Super Shuttle starting to drive off. The driver opens his car door and looks at me and asks, "Anthony?" I go, "Yea." He continues to tell me that it is 2:01 and he was about to leave, even though my reservation says between 2:00 and 2:15. He replies that it his extra 15 minutes, not mine. Well I make him out to be more rude than he is, he was actually nice and brought me to Newark International Airport rather quickly, notice I didn't say safely. (Damn those New York drivers.) I mean I arrived in one piece, but with high blood pressure.
THE AIRPORT: I go to check my luggage. (Do You know they have a neat system that you can scan your passport with! Love it!) My luggage weighed 67 pounds! What the F**K!? I was pisst. $65.00 later my luggage was checked. Ok it is now 3:00pm, what do I do for 3 hours? First: buy a USB....which was another $20.00 expense not expected. (lesson learned: you will ALWAYS forget something) Well 3 hours go by, and 85 pages of the European Union and a bag of chocolate chip cookies later, I'm ready to board my flight to Halifax. Of course a thunder storm doesn't help the nerves of an anxious traveler but that didn't seem to stop mother nature.

After about a 20 minute ride we arrived in Downtown Halifax. And let me tell you, it is pretty, clean and quite a nice city. I approve. The hostel is nice as well. Except Bo and I almost didn't make it! We just arrived as the office was closing. I worked my magic and the guy at the desk agreed to check us in, even though his shift was over, the office was closed and we were late (by no fault of our own mind you) but lucky us....we are here, comfortable and ready for tomorrow. Also here is Tyler and Robert who are also going to Semester at Sea. (Notice a trend?) We are all here for the same reason which is a great feeling! Tyler and Robert are also taking Global Music with me. Also check out Tyler's website....it is so cool and I'm kinda jealous =(
I was in the room for about 10 minutes, chatting with the mother on Facebook (awkward) and then we headed out to explore the night life of Halifax. We went to this packed bar called "Bitter End," where they were having "Martini Mondays"(...interesting/cool) I didn't drink but we talked to a couple of people there (none of them SASers). It was an awakening that even in Canada there was lingo and language that was unfamiliar to me.

Tomorrow morning! AHH! I still can't believe a year has went by and here I am, sitting in Halifax ready to take part in a one of a kind experience, all starting tomorrow! I had to say goodbye quickly to my mom and siblings, otherwise I would have burst into tears in the middle of the train station. (I just remembered I forgot a picture of Stimpy, my cat and one of my best friends) Traveling alone is a weird feeling. I called my mom at least 5 times just to talk to her. I hate not being able to pick up the phone and call, but I guess I'm purchasing a calling card with her consent. Of course I'm not alone anymore, but I still miss them and am sad that I won't be spending this summer with them. My brother said that I was lucky to do this. I hope they get the opportunity someday.

My alarm is set for 8:30...the morning awaits. Goodnight.

P.S. Erika is already on the boat! =)
Say Goodbye...

It is just past midnight, my house is quiet as everyone sleeps and I'm here: writing. Today was my idea of a perfect day: Sunny, clear sky, with a gentle breeze and a thunderstorm at night. I got to spend time with almost my entire family and some of my closest friends. Only I had to say goodbye. My family, my friends, and my pets will all be here while I'll be out there. Don't you wish you could just take everyone with you so that they too could see the wonders of your world?
I cried as I hugged my grandmother goodbye and only can imagine how my departure from my

My Aunt MaryAnn asked me, "Are you excited?" Of course I'm excited but due to the attachment I have to my loved ones anxiety rises and excitement takes a back burner until I'm finally settled in. With the limited internet we have (125 minutes for 2 months...what a joke?) and the absence of a phone...communication is going to be stagnant. I'm going to miss them.
Have you watched the movie Taken? Well if you haven't, "DON'T!" and if you have keep it away from the eyes of parents who already worry about their children traveling. I'm not going to get into details of this intense film but understand this, things happen and of course we can prevent them from happening by staying in the security of our own home, but then the word "living" would have a very interesting definition. I'm not saying we shouldn't all live with caution and regard that human life is a precious and fragile thing, but we must also live with positivity and hopes for the best! (with extreme alertness and intelligence, of course)

Even though I'm going to be having the time of my life, I am still going to miss my TV shows. "So You Think You Can Dance"!? I'm hooked! Also I won't be here for my favorite holiday: The Fourth of July. But don't worry I have my mom on DVR duty! =) The season and the specials will be waiting when I return. Also awaiting my return will be, hopefully, the money that I didn't spend on this already expensive trip. I need to conserve my expenses so that I can secure my life in the city next semester.
Well I think it is time for bed. I'm waking up early to triple check that I have everything and

P.S. Wish me luck on an emotional goodbye to my Mom, Brother and Sister. I love them.
